Did you know that The Hammer of Witches (Malleus Maleficarum) is the title of the book that laid the foundations for the brutal persecution of witchcraft in 1487 by the German Dominican and Inquisitor Heinrich Kramer, also known as Henricus Institor?
Before 1400, few were prosecuted for such accusations, but by the end of the Middle Ages, belief in witches and their wickedness had spread throughout Europe. In Slovenia, witch trials reached their peak in the second half of the 17th century.
This period, considered one of the darkest in the history of mankind, is represented by our permanent exhibition Superstition and Witchcraft in Slovenia.
